When it comes to your patio or walkway, two things matter above everything else: you love the way it looks, and it lasts. That's it. If it doesn't look right, you'll regret it every time you step outside. If it doesn't hold up, you'll be paying to fix it in five years. At CBJ, we do our best to make sure we check both boxes.
The Nicolock catalog below shows the paver stones we use. Browse the styles and pick the one you'll love waking up to every day. Further down the page, we walk you through exactly what we do during installation to make sure your project holds up for as long as possible.
Every paver walkway and patio CBJ installs follows the same four-step process — regardless of the size or style of the project. Here's what you're getting:
Start with a proper concrete base. It will keep everything looking perfect for much longer compared to other options, which is why we suggest it with every paver project.
Considering Maryland's weather — how we go from freezing ground in the winter to heat in August — major shifting will take place between the stones, causing tripping hazards and leaving your patio looking messed up. Not to mention it prevents weeds, which nobody likes.
Not all pavers hold up the same. In Maryland, you're dealing with ground that freezes solid in January and bakes in August — and cheaper pavers crack, fade, and crumble when they go through that cycle year after year. That's why we primarily work with Nicolock. They're built for climates like ours and the quality shows over time.
Beyond durability, Nicolock comes in a wide range of styles, colors, and sizes — so you're not giving up looks to get longevity. You can have both.
The edges are where most paver patios start to fall apart. Without proper edging, the outside pavers have nothing holding them in — and after a Maryland winter, they start spreading outward. You get gaps in the middle, pavers rocking underfoot, and a mess that gets worse every year.
We use landscaping adhesive along with edge restraints around the entire perimeter to lock everything in place. It's the kind of detail you don't notice when it's done right — but you definitely notice when it isn't.
Regular sand washes out — that's just what happens after enough Maryland rain. And once it's gone, your pavers start moving around, weeds find their way in, and the whole surface starts looking rough. Polymeric sand is different. It hardens in the joints after it's activated with water and stays put through freeze-thaw cycles, heavy rain, all of it.
It also keeps insects from burrowing in between the joints. The joints stay tight, the pavers stay locked, and the whole thing holds up the way it should year after year.
Common questions about paver and natural stone work in the Baltimore area. Still have more — just call or send us a message.
Properly installed concrete pavers last 25–50 years. The key is a correctly prepared base — compacted gravel and sand — that prevents shifting during Maryland's freeze-thaw cycles. Natural stone lasts even longer when set right.
Concrete pavers are manufactured to uniform sizes and are easier to replace if one cracks. Natural stone — flagstone, bluestone, fieldstone — is quarried rock that gives a more organic, unique look. Both are excellent choices for Maryland patios and walkways.
Most paver patio and walkway installations don't require a permit in Baltimore County, but it depends on the size, location, and whether grading work is involved. We'll let you know upfront if your project needs one.
Maryland's freeze-thaw cycle is hard on anything that isn't tied together properly. The ground freezes and expands in winter, then contracts in the heat of summer — and if your pavers are sitting on a gravel base, each one moves independently. After a couple of years you end up with an uneven surface, gaps between stones, and tripping hazards. A concrete base keeps the entire patio moving as one unit, so the whole thing stays level and looks the way it should.
